As part of the Trade Negotiations with the European Union, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the EU has made a lengthy request for a variety of Spirit names to be considered Geographical Indicators (GI).  If granted, these names would then be protected under a future Trade Agreement, meaning Australian businesses could not use these names in their products.

Every Distiller should be aware of these GI claims and determine if this will impact your products.

The list as at 4 July 2022 can be accessed at the DFAT website
